The essay

A free event platform, in 2026.

AgentConf YVR is free to attend. The conference is on Oct 17, 2026, at SFU Harbour Centre, in Vancouver. The conference has 150-250 seats, 12-15 speakers, 3 tracks, 2 keynotes, 3 panels, and 3 workshops. The VIP dinner is $99. This essay is on why the conference is free, and how the math works.

The free-to-attend decision is a producer's decision, not a marketing decision. The conference is funded by sponsors. The sponsors get a booth, a logo on the website, a mention in the opening keynote, and access to the attendee list (with consent). The math is that the sponsor revenue covers the venue, the catering, the speaker travel, and the A/V. The math does not work with paid tickets because the audience for a free conference is materially larger than the audience for a paid conference.

The free model also changes who shows up. The audience for a free conference is operators, founders, engineers, and researchers who are curious. The audience for a paid conference is the same people plus a smaller number of people whose employer is paying. The curious audience is more interesting to the speakers, and the curious audience is the audience the sponsors want to meet.

The VIP dinner is the only paid component. The dinner is on the evening of Oct 16, the night before the conference, at a Vancouver restaurant with a 60-person capacity. The dinner is the small-group setting where the speakers, the sponsors, and the operators actually get to know each other. The $99 price is symbolic — it is high enough to filter for serious attendees, low enough that anyone who wants to be there can be there.

The math, simplified: 200 attendees × $0 ticket = $0. 8 sponsors × $5K = $40K. VIP dinner: 60 attendees × $99 = $5.9K. Total revenue: $45.9K. Total cost: $40K. The conference breaks even, and the surplus funds the next year. The model works because the audience is the asset, not the ticket revenue.
