Vancouver is on its way to becoming a top-3 AI hub in North America. The talent is here. The capital is here. The operators are here. This is a VZU essay on the moment and what it means for the local ecosystem.
The talent is the most important part. Vancouver has the University of British Columbia, Simon Fraser University, and the British Columbia Institute of Technology — three research universities with strong computer science and AI programs. The graduates stay in Vancouver. The faculty spin out companies. The companies hire the graduates. The loop is local, and the loop is real.
The capital is here too. The Vancouver AI scene has raised over $1B in the last three years, with a meaningful concentration of capital in agentic AI specifically. The capital is not all from San Francisco. The BDC, the Canadian government, and a small but growing set of Vancouver-based funds are writing the local checks.
The operators are the part that is changing. The Vancouver operator of 2020 was a SaaS founder. The Vancouver operator of 2026 is an agentic AI founder. The shift is real, and it is accelerating. The VZU team is one of the operators in this shift. There are dozens of others, many of them more capitalized, more staffed, and louder than VZU. The shift is the story, not any one operator.
What it means for the local ecosystem: the next 18 months will see a meaningful number of Vancouver-based agentic AI companies raise Series A, sign enterprise customers, and ship production. The next 36 months will see a smaller number of those companies become the canonical Vancouver AI success stories. The next 60 months will see Vancouver named alongside Toronto, Montreal, and San Francisco as a top-3 North American AI hub. The momentum is real. The question is execution.
